Beroj, meaning 'light,' 'illumination,' 'sunny,' or the hillside that captures sunlight, is the inspiration behind the creation of Atelier Beroj by Canan Soylu. Hailing from Istanbul and currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Canan is not just the creator behind the atelier but also the visionary driving the idea of crafting things in a sustainable way as much as possible.

Her primary medium is clay, and alongside that, she utilizes wood, bio waste, and various natural, eco-friendly materials.

She immersed herself in clay artistry during the pandemic in 2021, continuing to explore and understand the materials she works with. Since then, she has crafted diverse works across different disciplines.

When she works with clay, her creations bear the unmistakable touch of her hands, evident in the imperfect shapes and occasional fingerprints left on the clay body. It's crucial for her that the audience experiences a connection with the human hands behind each object.

She wants them to feel the presence of hands crafting something distinctive, appreciating the beauty in imperfections and the tangible evidence of a hands-on process in her work.

Every piece is handmade in small batches, making each one truly unique. Embracing imperfections, the clay undergoes a series of experiences—from being molded by hand to firing in the kiln at different times and being individually glazed. Ceramics, in its essence, celebrates the charm of wobbles, subtle discolorations, and asymmetry.

Canan is passionate about bringing creations to life that foster a profound connection with nature. As a result, she delights in sharing objects, forms, and products through Atelier Beroj.
